PEDESTRIAN.TV has partnered with Griffith University to inspire you to pursue your goal.

Even for people who know what really matters to them, it can still be difficult to find the path to the career of their dreams. This was the case for Jasmine rasmussen, who always wanted to be a marine scientist because of his passion for conservation.

“As a little girl, I was raised with concern for nature, and thanks to my vacation on the Great Barrier Reef, I knew that I just had to work in this beautiful environment which was crucial for the survival of this planet, ”she said. “I was motivated by the curiosity to know how things work and since then I have had a passion for science.

[But] I didn’t know which path to take to get there. I was also disheartened by this career in high school, which made me wonder what path I should take and spent a lot of time thinking too much about which degree I should enroll in.

Jasmine decided to follow her gut and is currently studying for a Bachelor of Science degree at Griffith University, focusing on marine science – and absolutely adores it. Looking back, that was the obvious choice, but she almost ended up studying something she wasn’t passionate about: veterinary science. But after already realizing a few volunteer opportunities with Griffith for shark tagging and whale surveys, she had a taste of her dream and decided to make it come true. For anyone who is struggling to make a choice about what to study, her advice is to do something that suits both your head and your heart.

“It’s easy to fall into the trap of choosing the ‘safest’ option, but you’ll only really be successful in something you’re passionate about enough to work hard at,” she says. “I also didn’t realize until I left school that there are so many avenues to get to the degree of your dreams, and whatever your results you can actually do whatever you want with it.” some bridging courses and some dedication. And at the same time, don’t just take a course because your ATAR was good enough. I found that a lot of my high performing friends were being pushed into areas with no real passion for it. You have to do what you love.

Okay, but what if you haven’t understood or necessarily know what you like [yet]? Well, we’ve teamed up with Griffith Uni to create a Career Counselor Generator – it’ll ask you questions about your passions and interests and just might point you to a career path you’ll love. In addition, by completing the quiz, you will be in the running to win a JB HI-FI voucher worth $ 2000: how’s that for the incentive?

Alright, it’s time to make it count, we’re going to find you a career path.

For Jasmine, Griffith Uni provided invaluable hands-on experience and mentoring opportunities, and she has already landed a full-time job at the Global Wetlands Project after interning for them throughout her course. Beyond that, she found herself continually motivated by both the professors and the ongoing research around her at the university, proof that she could also do important work in sustainability.

“What surprised me the most when I started studying was the incredible support from our teachers,” she says. “I think as a nervous teenager I expected them to be unreachable, but whenever I looked to volunteer they were super helpful and encouraging. I was also surprised to see the incredible work going on in the labs and behind the scenes that you wouldn’t hear about in the mainstream media. It makes me realize that university is a really rich environment where we are surrounded by people who are at the cutting edge of their field and who are ready to give you a chance.

For Jasmine, the next step is to undertake a PhD so that she can take better care of our world. “Being able to draw on a wealth of knowledge about our most precious resource, the ocean, means that I can help secure the future of our natural world,” she says. “I understand that this is not the work of one man and I feel honored to be part of an incredible community of like-minded researchers who dedicate their lives to preserving the future of others. “

If you want your studies to be important but need an orientation, our quiz is a great place to start.
