No Way Home’s Benedict Cumberbatch comments on Harry Styles joining the MCU, and is he real?

Last month marked the fifth anniversary of Benedict Cumberbatch joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe via Doctor strange, and later this month we’ll see him resume the Master of the Mystic Arts in Spider-Man: No Path Home. But just because Cumberbatch plays one of the most important characters in this superhero franchise doesn’t mean he’s kept up to date on every aspect of it. For example, he apparently had no idea that former One Direction star Harry Styles was also part of the MCU. Wait, really?

Like those who have seen Eternals know, Harry Styles appeared in the credits scene of the film as Eros of Titan aka Starfox, another Eternal and brother of Thanos. Speaking with ET about his new movie The power of the dog, Benedict Cumberbatch shared his reaction to learning Styles as one of his fellow MCU costars:

I didn’t even know he was, I’m so irrelevant. He’s awesome, really awesome.

While everything in the MCU is connected in one form or another, as it stands, there isn’t exactly a straight line that can be drawn between Doctor Strange and the Eternals. So while it may seem odd at first that he’s in the dark, upon reflection I can’t say I’m surprised Benedict Cumberbatch wasn’t made aware of Harry Styles’ involvement in the MCU, but it looks like the Sherlock The star is happy to have him with him for the blockbuster.

Eternals is Styles’ second time in a movie, having previously starred in Christopher Nolan Dunkirk. Next year he will star alongside Florence Pugh in the Olivia Wilde film. Don’t worry darling., and he also boarded the romantic drama The policeman.

For those who have come this far and have not seen Eternals still or need a refresher on his mid-credits scene, Starfox and his mate Pip the Troll (voiced by Agents of SHIELD alum Patton Oswalt) transported aboard the ship from Thena, Makkari and Druig to offer assistance in reuniting with their friends. We don’t know yet when we’ll see Harry Styles’ Starfox again, but between a hypothetical eternal 2 and other MCU cosmic movie series like Thor and guardians of the galaxy, the means are certainly not lacking for its presence in this franchise to develop.

Regarding Benedict Cumberbatch, Spider-Man: No Path Home marks his fifth outing playing Doctor Strange, the film seeing him try to help Tom Holland’s Peter Parker by literally working his magic to make the world forget he’s Spider-Man. Sadly, something’s wrong with the spell, causing Spidey villains from other universes to invade the MCU. But Strange’s multiversal woes won’t end there, as next summer the surgeon-turned-wizard will be back in action for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams and Xochitl Gomez.

Spider-Man: No Path Home arrives on December 17th, with the Doctor strange sequel following May 6, 2022. Keep track of what the MCU is up to for the big screen with our upcoming guide to the Marvel movies.
