Netflix Takes Over As Streaming Home For One Of Peacock’s Best Shows, And A New Season Is Coming

Netflix has faced a new wave of subscriber scrutiny for much of 2022, even as it has become more open with its viewership metrics for its most popular movies and tv shows. It has a lot to do with getting popular series removed after one seasonand several cases of delay where projects were canceled mid-production, or even after filming is complete. So it’s particularly curious – albeit 100% festive, of course – that the streaming service has chosen to become the new streaming home for the hilarious, music-infused comedy Peacock. Girls5Evawith a third season ordered.

In the rare case that Netflix (or any service) steps in to “save” a show that hasn’t even been canceled, Girls5Eva can now move its star-studded excellence from Peacock to a platform where it will hopefully reach a much wider audience around the world. The company has officially ordered Season 3, according to THR, which is expected to debut at some point in The Netflix program for 2023.

Interestingly, Netflix and Peacock will own the streaming rights to the first two seasons, which focus on the hard-fought return to the limelight of a girl group whose fame peaked in the ’90s. Girls5Eva stars Sara Bareilles, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Paula Pell and Busy Philipps, with a creative team that includes Tina Fey, Robert Carlock, Meredith Scardino and Jeff Richmond. And fans of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt know that Fey & Co. are back in good hands at Netflix, which will hopefully use its merchandising line to deliver some A+ Girls5Eva swag.

The executive producer quartet shared a statement with the big news, poking fun at Netflix’s excess-filled docuseries Woodstock ’99: peace, love and rage In the process.

Our deepest thanks to Peacock for bringing Girls5eva to life and creatively supporting us at every turn since the first pitch. And we are infinitely grateful to our partners at NBCU for their unwavering commitment. Today, we’re thrilled to announce that our reunited girl group will be reunited once again on Netflix. We are very grateful to everyone on the streamer who fell in love with our musical. We can’t wait to bring Dawn, Wickie, Summer and Gloria to global Netflix audiences. Well, not fully featured, if you look closely Girls5eva can be seen in the background of the Woodstock ’99 documentary setting fire to a porta pot.

As someone who derives particular pleasure from top-notch musical genre parodies, I loved Girls5Eva since its debut, and would advise anyone who only happens to know about the show to watch the whole thing as soon as possible, if only to have some of the best earworms of your life bouncing around in your brain for weeks after watching. But it won’t just be that, because it’s so funny, and Paula Pell is a national treasure, as is Busy Phillipps’ lip movements as Summer.

Busy Phillipps reacted to the news with as much enthusiasm as expected, skimping on a single exclamation mark. Discover it instagram message below.
