“Typically, when people think of a media room, they only think of television,” says designer Keia McSwain. And for her, this is only a small part of the story: “It should be a space where they can congregate, escape, relax, hang out, have fun, play games and interact with each other…and have a drink or six,” jokes the designer, director of Kimberly + Cameron Interiors.
This multi-functionality set the stage for his media room in Whole Home 2022. McSwain’s plan for this long, narrow space began with a poster of his father’s favorite movie, Across 110th Street, with deep greens and orange. Not wanting to compromise on coolness, McSwain wrapped the entire space in a luxurious stitched skin chevron Wall cover d’Arte and added a gilt tortoiseshell glass pedestal table (to perch your glass) at the entrance to the room. “The General Atmosphere” she says, “is all about warmth and camaraderie.”

Huge 136″ LG Direct View LED Home cinema occupies an entire wall and works even in direct sunlight. Acoustics are enhanced by a wall-to-wall snakeskin pattern carpet of Fibreworks. “It was imperative to attenuate the noise,” explains the designer of her decision to cover the space with carpet.
A dramatic curved backsplash made with 12″ x 24″ terrain tiles by Ann Sacks sits beneath McSwain’s custom ironwork design from Architectural Grille. Drinks for adults and children can be stored separately in a convertible undercounter refrigerator drawers of the Signature kitchen suite. A small hidden drawer on top is perfect for storing treats. A wine fridge with two zones for red and white sits across the bar, ready for late movie nights and a Trane thermostat ensures optimal temperatures.
“The space has different nooks for relaxation and enjoyment,” McSwain says. One of the unifying elements of this seating area is the graphic pattern of the S. Harris hangings, which also appears on cushions and is interpreted in the metal arch of Architectural Grille above the bar.

McSwain’s space is synonymous with variety and comfort. Plush textures create an inviting ambience, while multiple seating areas provide space for cocktails, game night, or movie watching.
