Apple AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Max major updates coming, insider claims

The next AirPods Pro are on the way, and early adopters who bought them more than two years ago might be grateful. That’s according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, in his latest To light up newsletter.

Gurman corroborates rumors that the next AirPods Pro, the second generation version, will arrive this year.

As he points out, by the time the AirPods Pro 2 arrive, it will be almost three years since the first version. This means that if you were an early adopter – as I was – your headphones will need to be refreshed or, as Gurman puts it: “The current model has been on the market since fall 2019, so the batteries are probably already in trouble for some early adopters.

I’ll just add that on a personal note, my AirPods Pro are doing just fine, with no noticeable drop in performance.

But I may not be alone and others may be happy with the upgrade. Gurman sets the schedule for the new AirPods Pro “in the fall”. It’s no big surprise, but do note that the original AirPods Pro weren’t launched during an Apple keynote but separately, so don’t expect the next headphones to be announced alongside the next one. iPhone, for example.

There have already been many reports for the next headphones, including sensors that will make them sophisticated devices for health monitoring.

And a new design seems likely, including a reduced stem compared to the current model, or even no stem at all.

Even more important than the design, it’s likely that the next AirPods Pro could deliver lossless sound. I’ve talked to Apple a lot about lossless audio and it seems to me that offering it on Apple’s own headphones, something that’s not currently available, is probably a priority for the R&D guys.

Gurman also talks about AirPods Max. While there isn’t thought to be an update to the over-ear headphones, new colors could be on the way. And even a price drop, hopes Gurman, although I’m less sure.

New colors would be good and logical – Apple loves to refresh the colors of its iPhone and iPad range, so why not the AirPods Max?

And if the next AirPods Pro handle lossless audio well, updating the high-end AirPods Max seems like a strong possibility, if not a certainty of the race.

AirPods Pro 2 and the new AirPods Max colors will almost certainly be her in a few months. Stay tuned for more details as we have them.
